An Exhibition of Lithography Portfolio

Curator's Note

It is rare for so many artists across generations, regions, and artistic languages to come together in a single creative endeavour. The lithography portfolio, which includes 29 lithographs from an edition of 30, emerged from such a moment, conceived as a tribute to the artistic legacy that Rabindranath Tagore started in Santiniketan. To mark one hundred years of Kala Bhavana, a unique collaborative project was initiated in the form of a traditional lithography workshop. Master artists were invited to work with limestone slabs, greasy crayons and ink, and a hand-operated litho press, embracing the discipline, patience, and physical intimacy that define the medium. This was not merely a technical exercise, but a return to a pedagogical ethos rooted in making, experimentation, and shared learning. In 1926, Gaganendranath Tagore donated his lithographic press to the institution, a gesture that significantly shaped its printmaking curriculum and introduced generations of artists to graphic processes. Lithography itself developed in 1796 by Alois Senefelder has long been valued for its ability to retain the immediacy of drawing while allowing multiple impressions, making it both expressive and democratic. The resulting portfolio brings together works by Arunkumar HG, Atin Basak, Chandra Bhattacharjee, Debanjan Roy, Jogen Chowdhury, Jayashree Chakravarty, K. S. Radhakrishnan, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Laxma Goud, Mahjabin Majumder, Madhvi Parekh, Manish Pushkale, Manu Parekh, N. S. Harsha, Prabhakar Kolte, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Seema Kohli, Shahabuddin Ahmed, Shibu Natesan, T. V. Santhosh, and Tawatchai Somkong. Together, these prints stand as both individual artistic statements and a collective homage, celebrating lithography as an art form and honouring the rich tradition of print culture. The exhibition is being presented by Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya.
